Volunteering: It's a Good Habit to Have!

August 27, 2009

“The unemployment rates in our area and our nation continue to grow.  Many individuals are searching for something to fill their time, but they are also looking for ways to enhance their employable skills or possibly searching for a way of cultivating new skills.  Volunteering is a great option, and at ACH, we recommend it as a great habit to establish!†shares Marcy Todd, Volunteer Coordinator.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

“Adding the experience one has gained from volunteering is also important on a resume or job application.  Skills such as customer service, effective communication and flexibility are abilities employers embrace.  They are marketable pluses for a job applicant.â€

Employers also look at candidate's activities outside of the workplace.  Volunteering can make a big difference! This is especially true when the candidate has “taken the bull by the horns†and uses idle time (lay-off) to hone current skills and cultivate new ones.â€

The “Ventures in Volunteering†orientation program is held each month to introduce potential volunteers to the mechanics of hospital volunteering.  This is a required program covering everything from Planetree hospital concepts to patient confidentiality and the benefits associated with volunteering at ACH.

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Alliance CommunityHospital will host its September “Ventures in Volunteering†orientation program on Tuesday, September 1st from 1:00 p.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 1-A conference room.

“While being unemployed is at the very least, stressful, individuals have found that by focusing their energies on others, they reduce their own stress level, which provides an optimistic outlook for the volunteer.  Volunteering provides an outlet for anxiety and energy!â€

â€œOur volunteers embrace the opportunity to make a positive difference in another's life,†she said.  We tailor each volunteer's service to their skills and comfort level.  Our program has taken on a different face as we have enlarged our service area opportunities with a total of 54 available!

Please call the volunteer department at 330-596-7822 or 330-596-7821 with questions or to make reservations, since reservations for the orientation session are required.  Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
