Concerned Community Members Learn about COPD, Sleep Apnea

November 8, 2012

More than a dozen area residents are breathing a little easier today.  Some might be sleeping a little sounder, too.

That’s because on Monday, October 29th, they listened to Alliance Community Hospital’s (ACH) Abdul Basit, M.D. present a free lecture on lung health at the Rodman Public Library at 2:00P.M.

“Is there something I can do for all the phlegm I’m having?”  “How can I stop coughing so much?”  “Are steroids good or bad for my bronchitis?” were just a few of the questions fielded by Dr. Basit as he helped provide attendants with a basic understanding of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other pulmonary/lung disorders.

Dr. Basit fielded these and dozens of other questions from interested community members, some of whom expanded their inquiries into the field of Sleep Apnea.

When asked, Dr. Basit explained that Complex Sleep Apnea he explained that obstructive apnea that results from a blocked airway, while complex or central apnea is caused by the brain ineffectively communicating the correct breathing actions to the appropriate [breathing] muscles.  He said that, while snoring is the most common sign of obstructive sleep apnea, just because a person doesn't snore does not mean they are not suffering from apnea. Sleep studies are required for definitive diagnoses, he said.

Dr. Basit encouraged those concerned to ask their primary care physicians about general health questions.  “Your family physician is the driver.  He or she is the one to help guide you in the right direction,” he said.

He also urged anyone interested to contact him for specific pulmonary or sleep medicine issues.

Dr. Basit graduated from Rawalpindi Medical College and completed his residency programs in internal medicine at Trenton Affiliated Hospital in Trenton, New Jersey and Lincoln Medical Center in Bronx, New York.  He also completed fellowships at The New York Hospital Center of Queens and SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Pulmonary Disease and Sleep Medicine.
