April 19, 2007

On Wednesday, as part of the To Your Health Wellness Series, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />AllianceCommunityHospital will present “Hey Doc! I saw this drug on TV... is it right for me?â€

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Dr. Paul Witkowski, Pharmacy director at ACH, will discuss how prescription drugs are advertised to the public.

According to Witkowski, in the last several years direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising has skyrocketed. He said a reason this has happened is that "it works."

“Sales of drugs advertised this way tend to increase dramatically even though the consumer cannot purchase the products directly,†he said.

The program will give tips on how to better understand what these advertisements are trying to sell and how they are doing it. In addition, the rules the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires companies to follow will be discussed, as well as how companies sometimes "bend" these rules. Several current television advertisements will also be presented, analyzed and discussed.

The seminar will be held in conference room 1-A, located on the first floor of the hospital, from 6 - 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
