Alliance Community Hospital teaming with Cleveland Clinic Akron General to improve stroke response

Alliance Community Hospital has partnered with Cleveland Clinic Akron General to provide improved stroke response through a state-of-the-art telemedicine program.

The partnership allows potential stroke victims who are transported to Alliance Community Hospital's Emergency Department to receive immediate expert neurological evaluation by a stroke neurologist and other neuro specialists from Akron General using video and audio technology. Because time is critical in caring for stroke victims, area residents now have a better local option when transported to Alliance Community Hospital. Patients who exhibit stroke signs can be virtually evaluated by a neurologist and other neuro specialists 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Telemedicine is a secure, two-way audio and video consultation program giving patients the highest level of care close to home. This video connection allows the neurologists and neuro specialists at Akron General, who are highly trained in evaluating and treating acute neurological conditions, to see and speak directly to the Alliance patient and emergency physician, assist with the diagnosis, and help select the most effective treatment.

"Our staff in the Emergency Department has undergone extensive training in order to fully implement the Telestroke program," said Dominick Catalano, MD, medical director, Emergency Department, Alliance Community Hospital. "We are grateful to Akron General for this partnership, which will assuredly help us save valuable time in treating stroke victims locally."

Each year in the U.S., nearly 800,000 people have a stroke, making this condition the fourth largest cause of death. The key to surviving a stroke is to identify early warning signs and, if needed, obtain immediate medical treatment to minimize damage.

"By providing patients with quick access to this type of specialized evaluation, patients receive timely treatment close to home -- at Alliance Community Hospital. This reduces the need for travel unless highly specialized care is required and ensures that patients receive high quality, specialized care to minimize the effects of the stroke," said William Reisinger, DO, medical director, telemedicine, Akron General.
