Alliance Community Hospital hosting blood drive

September 28, 2016

The monthly Alliance Community Hospital/American Red Cross (ACH/ARC) blood drive will be held Oct. 6 from 12:30 to 6 p.m. in conference room 1-A in the hospital.

"We cannot impress enough the never-ending need for blood and blood products in our community," Michele Quinn, ACH coordinator of volunteer services, said. "Donating blood is something that takes little time, costs nothing and yet provides a lifeline for so many community members."

Individuals are eligible to donate every 56 days. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be 17 years of age (unless a permission slip has been signed by a parent/guardian for a 16-year-old) and be in general good health the day of the donation. A photo ID or donor card must also be presented.

According to Quinn, the entire process is quick and efficient. After registering, a donor meets privately with an ARC representative for a medical history which also includes having his/her blood pressure taken and a finger-prick blood sample to test the iron level of the individual's blood. Once this is completed, the individual moves to the drawing room where the process takes about 15-20 minutes.

After making the donation, the donor spends some time at the canteen for some snacks and beverages that will help the body begin to replenish from the donation. All donors will also receive a meal voucher to be used in the hospital caf.

Donors are asked to schedule an appointment for the drive in order to maintain an efficient donor flow, although no walk-in will be turned away.

Appointments can be made by calling the volunteer office at the hospital at 330-596-7822 or 330-596-7821.
