ACH Volunteer Program Beginning New Format

November 5, 2007

As of December 1, 2007, the process of becoming a volunteer at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />AllianceCommunityHospital will change in order to better prepare individuals interested in joining an active and growing volunteer program.

“This is an exciting change that will enable those individuals who are interested in volunteering the opportunity to see what a diversified volunteer program we offer at ACH,†explains Marcy Todd, Volunteer Coordinator.  “This will also give potential volunteers the opportunity to share their talents and interests as we explore new avenues of hospital volunteering.â€

Each month, the volunteer department will host a “Venture into Volunteering†curriculum that will provide an over-all view of all aspects of volunteering at the hospital.  Everything from the history of volunteering at ACH to current day volunteering, safety, confidentiality laws and everything in between will be addressed.

Interested individuals will be required to attend one of these sessions before they receive an application packet.  After the packet has been received and the applicant has filled out the paperwork, an interview will be scheduled with Todd.

During the interview, particular attention is given to the volunteer's talents and skills which will enable placement in a service area that is complimentary to the individual.

Once all of the requirements of the application process have been completed, including fingerprinting and reference checks, a determination will be made as to the compatibility of the individual and the program.  “It is necessary to go through this process in order to secure the type of volunteer who embraces the same objectives as our organization.â€

After an individual is received into the volunteer program, a service area and individual schedule will be determined.  Training for that area will also be established.

Another change to the program involves the entry age for volunteers.  Previously an individual could begin to volunteer at ACH at 14 years of age, but as of November 1, the entry requirement was raised to age 16.

“We are very proud of our volunteer program at ACH and of the many services our volunteers provide.  By changing our orientation process, we feel individuals will be much better informed of the many volunteer opportunities we offer at our hospital and make the choice to join our team,†states Todd.

With the upcoming “baby boomer†generation beginning to enter the volunteer force, particular attention will be paid to individual talents and desires to provide service in new and exciting ways.  “We want to be first in line to offer challenging volunteer options to future volunteers.

The first “Ventures into Volunteering†program will be held on Tuesday, December 4 from 1 p.m. until approximately 4 p.m. in the hospital's Health Caring Resource Library, located on the first floor of the hospital off of the main lobby.   Reservations are required and can be made through the hospital's volunteer department.
