ACH Medical Foundation goes hi-def

July 18, 2012

The Alliance Community Hospital (ACH) Foundation recently bought 14 high-definition endoscopes that are thinner in diameter, which reduces patient discomfort. The $275,000 investment in technology was made possible through ACH Foundation funds for use on endoscope procedures in the Center for Digestive Health/Pain Management.

"High-definition endoscopy procedures offer improved depth perception, enhanced detection of indications of disease and high quality images," said Karen Burchett, coordinator of the ACH Endoscopy/Center for Pain. "We want to stay on the leading edge of technology in order to offer our patients the absolute best care and service possible."

Endoscopy is a minimally-invasive procedure in which an endoscope (a tube-like instrument with a camera on the end), is passed through a natural body opening or small incision. This allows doctors to examine remote, interior surfaces of organs and tissues. The entire procedure is recorded, which allows doctors to review it in detail (and repeatedly, as warranted). An endoscopy procedure can be performed on various parts of the body and usually requires less hospital time (offering a quicker recovery period) than can be expected with certain surgical diagnostic procedures.

The ACH Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization that raises funds for medical equipment and programs, which enables the ACH staff to provide extraordinary health care to its patients. Money for the foundation is raised through annual and capital campaigns, planned giving and endowment programs, major gift plans, and special events.

Some examples of services benefitting from ACH Foundation efforts include: bedside telemetry monitors, which help give clinicians constant observation capabilities, and digital imaging equipment (such as a mammography machine that provides clearer, detailed images for better women's health diagnostic services). Foundation fundraising also helps provide financial assistance to ACH and its entities through maintenance of funds designated for the following areas: building maintenance, patient care, continuing staff education and wellness, the Alliance Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice department, and unrestricted (which allows for donations to be distributed to the area of greatest need).

The ACH Foundation will hold its largest singular Hospice fundraiser, the annual "Steppin' Out for Hospice" 5K Run/Walk, on Aug. 18.
