September 9, 2008

On Thursday, September 11th, the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />AllianceCommunityHospital will be sponsoring their monthly American Red Cross blood drive in honor of 5-year old Danielle Edwards from Louisville.

Danielle is in her final phase of chemotherapy treatment for leukemia at Akron Children's Hospital.  During the past two weeks, Danielle has had numerous whole blood and platelet transfusions.  Danielle's mother, Tracy Edwards, is thanking 11 strangers who made blood donations in order to meet Danielle's transfusion needs during one week.

“Until you are in a situation where your loved one is in need of blood, you don't give much thought to whether or not blood and blood products will be available.  I guess we all assume it just appears!  But when it is your loved one who is waiting on platelets to arrive from a center more than two hours away, you painfully understand why there is such a need for blood donors.â€

“We cannot thank donors enough for the life-saving gift they have given to Danielle and so many others like her.  We just wish there was some way to convince individuals how very important it is to make a donation – it's a matter of life for others.â€

Hours for the blood drive have been extended in order to accommodate the number of donors anticipated.  The drive opens at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 4:30 p.m. in conference room 1-A.  Additional equipment and staff have been scheduled for the drive.

“We cannot emphasize enough the importance of scheduling an appointment for the drive.  While we certainly appreciate those donors who “walk inâ€, we do have to position them in between our donors who have a scheduled appointment.  That means some donors, particularly the walk in donors, may have a longer than usual wait.  We want to provide a good donor experience for everyone, so keeping the process moving in a timely manner is very important,†shared Marcy Todd, volunteer coordinator at ACH.

Donors can visit the scheduling website,, and establish their own profile and appointment.  Donors are also welcome to call the ACH volunteer office, 330-596-7822 or 330-596-7821, and the staff will be happy to schedule appointments for donors.

Requirements for donating include weighing no less than 110 pounds, being at least 17 years old and able to provide a photo ID.  Donor cards can also be used for ID purposes.
