Common Sleep Disorders & Tips

Common Sleep Disorders

Listed below are some common sleep disorders that can be diagnosed and treated at the Sleep Disorders Center at Alliance Community Hospital:

  • Chronic Insomnia – The inability to fall asleep or remain asleep.
  • Sleep Apnea – A condition in which breathing stops many times during the night. Sleep apnea is often characterized by loud snoring and daytime sleepiness.
  • Narcolepsy – A disorder which causes a person to fall asleep suddenly many times a day, often at inappropriate times.
  • Restless Leg Syndrome – A disorder that causes people to have a ‘crawling’ sensation in their legs when they lie down to sleep.
  • Snoring – Frequent or loud snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea.
  • Periodic Limb Movement Disorder – A disorder that causes your arms or legs to jerk repeatedly during sleep; as a result you feel tired upon waking. Most people are not aware of the repetitive movements.
  • Work-Shift Change Syndrome – Shift workers and others who have irregular sleep patterns can suffer from tiredness and insomnia.
  • Sleepwalking – A sequence of behaviors that can cause a person to get out of bed and walk without full consciousness.

Tips For a Better Night’s Sleep

Certain measures can be taken to get a good night’s sleep. Follow these suggestions to feel more rested:

  • Exercise daily, but at least three hours before going to bed.
  • Decide on a pre-set bedtime and rise time, and stick to them.
  • If you do happen to lose sleep, try going to bed an hour or two earlier than usual the next night.
  • Try not to nap during the day.
  • Keep your bedroom at a comfortable sleeping temperature (60-65 degrees).
  • Make sure your mattress is in good condition.
  • Warm baths can promote relaxation.
  • Try avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco, especially in the evening.
  • When hungry, eat a light snack.
  • When you turn off the lights, try to relax and avoid worrisome thinking.
  • If you cannot sleep after 30 minutes, get up, but try to stay relaxed. Go back to bed twenty minutes later.
