WOC Nurses Week

May 1, 2012

Alliance Community Hospital (ACH) recently celebrated Wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) nurses week. WOC nurses are specially trained to provide direct care to individuals with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, other complicated wounds, and continence disorders.

WOC nurses are involved in every step of an individual’s care: participating in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of a plan of care for patients with wound, ostomy, and continence care needs. These nurses act as an educator, consultant, researcher, and administrator for patients in multiple health care settings, including inpatient, outpatient, long-term care, and home health.

WOC nurses have the education, experience, and credentials necessary to provide excellent wound care.

The other ACH ostomy nurses are: 1) Cathy Selway RN, BSN, CWON with Alliance Visiting Nurses Association and has 13 1/2 years experience in wound and ostomy care, 2) Rosemary McLauglin RN, BSN, CWOCN who works in the Wound Care Department and has 8 years experience in wound and ostomy care and 3) Debra Clair, PhD, RN, APN, WOCN, WCC, DWC, who recently joined ACH’s Wound Care staff.

Clair has eight years of wound and ostomy experience and is an advanced practice nurse. She has extensive education which includes special certifications and she has many years’ worth of experience in carious medical settings, including hospitals, out-patient clinics, long-term care, and home care settings. Clair is collaborating with Daniel Mitchell, MD, a general surgeon and the Medical Director of ACH's outpatient wound care program.

Alliance Community Hospital is proud of the combined 29 1/2 years of ostomy care experience these three nurses provide and for the many years of experience for wound care given by the 8 Wound Care Certified (WCC) nurses across the ACH organization.

ACH plans to expand their services across the continuum of care for ostomy and wound patients. Over the next year ACH and AVNA will be working together to form a local support group for ostomy patients. If you, or somebody you know, would like to be on the mailing list for this service as it develops please call 330.596.7940.
