Alliance Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Honor Volunteers
Fifty-four people attended the annual Alliance Hospice Celebration and retirement party on Thursday, March 24 at the First Christian Church. Sonny Felger was the retiree and guest of honor, along with his seven family members. For a group of unique and dedicated people who deliver services that provide assurance, peace, and confidence, this event was filled with laughter and the joys of living. All branches of Hospice were represented including nurses, home care aides, social workers, clergy, therapists and volunteers.
Larry Karlen, clergy and Hospice volunteer, gave the blessing before the covered dish banquet. After dinner, Sue Barrick, RN and Hospice Supervisor gave a tribute to Sonny Felger for twelve years of dedicated service to the Alliance Hospice Program. In those years, Felger volunteered over 2000 hours and traveled more than 10,000 miles delivering medications to Hospice patients.
Karlen continued the roast and toast as he recounted memories of growing up in Felger’s neighborhood and working with Felger as a young man.
“In those days, who would have guessed that we would end up serving the Lord together in this manner,” Karlen said. Through comments it was pointed out that Felger is a gourmet cook, works with stained glass and has excellent carpentry skills, and is a true family man. Barrick presented Felger with a metal, outdoor flower ornament adorned with assorted gift cards from area establishments and cards.
The tables were decorated with Habanera English Daisy plants in a wire basket surrounded by various gardening tools. Each volunteer was presented a gardening tool for their dedication to the program. Door prizes were won by: Kirk Bloss, Bonnie Kidd, Patty Morrow, Virginia Mundy, Grant Porter, Joan Roberts, Arla Rumsey, Bob Slutz, and Maxine Wood. Tables of people competed with other tables through games of: “Who said it?” famous quotes and Alliance trivia questions. The revolving guessing game winners were Jerry Booth, Bonnie Kidd, Diane Pierce and Bob Slutz.
AVNA & Hospice Volunteer Sonny Felger received an honorary cake and lots of well wishes as he retires from volunteering after 12 faithful years of service.
