During the October craft show at the CommunityCareCenter, residents, with the aid of hospital colleagues, hosted a bake sale. The proceeds from that sale were earmarked to help area residents have a better holiday season. While the actual route this would take was not clear at the time, the opportunity to help soon became apparent.
Kim Muniz, RN, and other hospital colleagues are spearheading a drive to collect as many coats, hats, mittens and boots as possible for area residents. Kim is working in conjunction with the local Salvation Army for distribution of these items.
Members of the Family, Friends and Volunteers Planetree component, who plan projects and events for the residents, approached them about using their proceeds from the bake sale to assist with this project. With a unanimous approval from the residents, component members purchased coats and children's hats for the residents to donate to the coat drive.
“It is very important for our residents to have the opportunity to contribute to projects and programs. Each quarter they choose a program to support, and with the backing of our hospital colleagues, we have been able to make a difference for a variety of organizations. Being able to provide warm coats to area residents provides our residents with a real sense of helping,†shares Cindi McClain and Lori Underwood, CCC activity directors.
The coat drive will continue through December 14 at AllianceCommunityHospital. On Thursday, December 11, the hospital will host its monthly American Red Cross blood drive, and donors are asked to also bring in new or gently used winter coats, hats, mittens and boots in support of the project.
