2008 Charity Golf Classic
Torrents of ran could not deter a throng of golfers playing for a good time and an even better cause June 23.
The ninth annual Alliance Community Hospital Golf Outing teed off under blue skies at Noon at the Alliance Country Club, only to be doused with summer rain showers a few hours later.
No matter, since 24 teams of golfers braved the damp for the benefit of several area non-profit organizations dubbed “goodwill neighbor designees,” that included the Alliance Family YMCA, the Alliance Neighborhood Center and the Stark County Interagency Council on Homelessness. Each will benefit equally from any profits raised by the event.
One particularly enthusiastic attendant was keynote speaker Celeste Barnes, who spoke on behalf of her employer, the Stark County Interagency Council on Homelessness.
Barnes is likely such a devoted advocate for the agency because of her first-hand experience with homelessness.
“When the paramedics found me, my oxygen levels were so low that my hands were purple and the doctors were worried about my breathing,” she told a captive audience as she spoke about the low point in her life that ultimately led her to a state of homelessness several years ago.
Barnes described the events that triggered her plight, including health insurance at her former workplace that was so expensive, she couldn’t afford it, which left her without health care benefits. Her financial problems were compounded by a drunken driving fine resulting from her depression over her situation.
Thanks to the collective support of the homeless services collaborative, Barnes got a new lease on life and after being released from the hospital and getting back on her feet, she earned a degree from Stark State College and is now an employee of the council.
She credits her success story to the caring and compassion she received through the agency and its benefactors.
“I thank you for all that you do. It means so much to so many people and I would just ask you all to remember that, homeless or not, we are all the same; we’re all people,” Barnes said emotionally.
ACH CEO Stan Jonas, FACHE praised her words, telling listeners that there are nearly 1,200 homeless people in Stark County alone and encouraging them to search their own hearts when considering the realities of homelessness and the factors that can cause its unfortunate prevalence.
Along with ACH, the event’s title sponsors were the Alliance Neighborhood Center, anonymous donors in support of the Alliance Family YMCA and the Stark County Interagency Council on Homelessness, Fidelity National Collections, and Aultman Health Foundation. The “Munchy Mobile” snack cart was sponsored by Lavery Automotive Sales & Service and “Scrambler” supporters were Cassaday-Turkle-Christian, Inc.; CFI Interiors; Dr. Richard Lehrer, Robert Speer and Mr. Ward Tuttle.

For fun, the team with the fourth lowest score was actually awarded the largest monetary purse of $400 and it went to Smith Ambulance of Stark Summit (Rick Annen, Bill Ridge, Rob Hritz and Scott Negulici).
The next largest purses were awarded as follows: $300 went to General Commercial Corporation (Charles Baylor, Chuck Grove, Dick Hohler, John Hunter) and $150 was awarded to Standard Plumbing/Johnson Controls (David Grabowsky, Phil Williams, Dave Peters, Ed Dunkerly).
The overall champion team of the day, Butler Wick & Co. (B.J. Robb, Doug Baxter, Mike Bugara and Scott Robb), was recognized for having the lowest team score of 57.
Proximity awards went to Jason Candle, Gerry Wuchter, Kristen DeDent and Doug Baxter, among other awardees. Chandler Mazeall, II won $530 in the 50-50 raffle and donated all of it back to the “goodwill neighborhood designees.”
